What is the Math B Regents exam?

The term "Math B" refers to a new Regents examination in mathematics. The Mathematics B Regents exam was offered for the first time in June 2000 and will eventually replace the Regents examination in Course III. If you entered high school in September 2000 or later, you must pass either the Mathematics B or the Course III Regents examination in order to qualify for an advanced Regents diploma.

When do I take the Math B Regents Exam?

The Math B Regents exam is administered in January, June and August of every school year. Most students take this exam after completing approximately 3 years of high school-level mathematics courses. Your school and mathematics program in which you are enrolled determine when you should take the Math B Regents exam.

How is the Math B Regents Exam set up?

The Math B Regents exam is a 3-hour long exam that consists of four parts with a total of 34 questions. The accompanying table shows the point breakdown of the test.

  • Part I consists of 20 standard multiple-choice questions with four possible answers labeled (1), (2), (3), and (4).
  • The questions in Part II III and IV require that you show or explain how you arrived at your answer by indicating the necessary steps involved, including appropriate formula substitutions, diagrams, graphs, charts and so forth. If you use a guess-and-check strategy to arrive at an answer for a problem, you must include at least one guess that does not work before you show the correct guess.
  • All questions in each of the four parts of the test must be answered.

Where do I show my answers and work?

Scrap paper is not provided or permitted for any part of the exam.
  • After you figure out the answer to each multiple choice question in Part I, you must write the numeral that precedes the correct choice in the space provided on the separate tear-off answer sheet for Part I found at the back of the question booklet.
  • The answers and the work for the questions in Parts II, III and IV must be written directly in the question booklet in the space provided underneath the questions. All work should be written in pen except the graphs which should be drawn in pencil.
  • If you need graph paper, it will be provided in the question booklet.

How is your Math B Regents score determined?

Solutions to questions in Part II, III and IV that are not completed correctly may receive partial credit according to a special scoring guide provided by the New York State Education Department.

The maximum total raw score for the Math B Regents exam is 88 points. After the raw score for the four parts of the test are added together, a conversion table provided by the New York State Education department is used to convert the raw score to a final test score that falls within the usual 0 to 100 scale.

What is collected at the end of the Math B Regents exam?

  • Any tool provided to you by your school such as a compass or a graphing calculator.
  • The question booklet with your name and your school's name near the top of the first page.
  • The signed part I answer sheet confirming you did not receive unlawful assistance.

The Math B Regents exam tests you on a wide range of topics including:
  • Direct, indirect, and coordinate geometric proofs.
  • Area and volume
  • Circle relationships and angle measurement
  • Properties and operations with real and complex numbers; algebraic operations with fractions and radicals; factoring
  • Solving quadratic equations including those with irrational and nonreal roots; solving systems of equations.
  • Linear, quadratic, logarithmic, exponential, and trigonometric functions and their graphs.
  • Transformations and functions
  • Normal curve; fitting a line or curve to data using least squares regression; scatterplots; coefficient of linear correlations
  • Counting methods and probability in two-outcome experiments
  • Trigonometric equations and laws.
