The Math A Regents exam has replaced Math Courses I and II as of January 2003. If you entered high school on or after September 2001, you must pass either the Math A or Math B Regents exam before you can graduate. When do I take the Math A Regents exam?Your school and mathematics program will determine when exactly you should take the Math A Regents exam. The test is administered January, June and August of each school year. Most students will be required to take the exam one to two years after beginning their high-school-level math. Click here to see the latest NYS Regents exam schedule.How is the Math A Regents exam set up?Beginning with the January, 2004 exam, the Math A Regents exam is divided into four parts with a total of 39 questions. All of the questions in each of the parts must be answered in the allotted three-hour time limit. All work should be done in pen except for the drawings of graphs and diagrams, which should be drawn in pencil. Scrap paper is not permitted but the question booklet provides plenty of blank space to work out your answers. Part I- 30 standard multiple-choice questions labeled (1), (2), (3) and (4). An answer sheet is provided as the last page in the question booklet. Parts II, III and IV- 9 open-ended response questions requiring the work of all steps taken to find the correct answer. If you choose a guess-and-check strategy, you must show at least one guess that does not work to receive credit. What do I need to bring to the test?You must have access to a straightedge (ruler), a compass and a scientific calculator to the Math A Regents exam. Formula sheets will not be provided and/or permitted. Graphing calculators are permitted but not required and the memory must be cleared prior to taking the exam.
